The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the gamification of virtual platforms is transforming teaching and learning processes in school education. This study conducts a systematic review following the PRISMA 2020 protocol, covering the 2019–2026 period, based on an analysis of thirteen studies regarding the application of AI in gamified educational environments.
The results demonstrate that AI-enhanced gamified environments can contribute to improved academic performance, increased student motivation and engagement, and the adaptive personalization of learning. These benefits are particularly significant for students with special educational needs, given the adaptive capabilities offered by AI-based tools.
However, the impact of these technologies is constrained by various limitations, including connectivity and digital infrastructure gaps, insufficient teacher training, and the absence of a specific national public policy regarding the use of AI for educational purposes. These conditions can hinder the equitable and sustainable implementation of emerging technologies in schools.
The study concludes that the integration of artificial intelligence and gamification represents a pedagogical alternative with the potential to strengthen educational processes in Ecuador. Nevertheless, effective implementation requires addressing the identified barriers through strategic investments in technological infrastructure, continuous teacher training programs, and the establishment of ethical and regulatory frameworks that ensure the comprehensive protection of children in digital environments.
