Abstract

This research evaluated occupational risks and their impact on the overall health of operators exposed to aluminum sulfate at the Tixán Drinking Water Treatment Plant (DWTP) in Cuenca. The study was prompted by concerns regarding the effects of continuous exposure to industrial chemicals in water treatment environments, where chemical, physical, and ergonomic risks converge to potentially affect worker health. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing a descriptive-correlational, cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 13 operators directly exposed to aluminum sulfate. Data were collected through direct observation, structured surveys, and the application of an occupational risk identification and assessment matrix. Results revealed high exposure to aluminum sulfate particles and aerosols during chemical dosing, preparation, and storage activities. Frequent contact with irritants was observed in 76.9% of the operators, and 61.5% did not consistently use personal protective equipment. Additionally, deficiencies were identified regarding ventilation, safety signage, and occupational safety training. Ergonomic assessments revealed awkward postures and manual load handling—factors associated with work-related fatigue and musculoskeletal disorders. The study concludes that operators at the Tixán DWTP are exposed to working conditions that pose a high risk to their overall health; therefore, it is essential to strengthen preventive measures, occupational health surveillance, and industrial safety controls.
